RELIEF SCULPTURE WORKSHOP - Model, Mould & Cast
​
Relief sculpture is significant in world art, from ancient times to the present day and continues as a means of creative expression. This workshop will equip you with the skills and knowledge to create your own cast relief artworks.
Modelling in Clay. You will learn about preparing the clay and equipment, techniques for transferring images to a bed of clay and how to model your relief, from blocking-out to modelling form, to fine finishing.
Moulding. In this session you will make a plaster waste mould of your relief. We’ll look at other mould making techniques and materials including the lost wax bronze casting process. You will end the session by filling your mould with a fine casting plaster ready for
Colouring & Finishing. You will learn how to remove the waste mould and clean the cast before moving on to colouring the cast. There'll be a selection of colours and finishes to choose from.

Across the three sessions there'll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and presentations about relief sculpture and other processes.
​
All materials and equipment are included together with learning resources and information about health and safety and suppliers.

DIRECT PLASTER SCULPTURE

Direct plaster sculpture has a long history in western sculpture and is often associated with artists of the modernist period; Frink, Hepworth, Marini, Lipchitz etc. Direct plaster is one of the most freely creative and immediate sculpture techniques.
​
Session 1 - Design & Armature. You will design your sculpture before building a suitable armature using wood and/or metals The armature design is crucial to the success of your sculpture. You'll then move on to packing your armature and applying a plaster bandage skin.
​
Session 2 - Direct Working. In this session you will learn the techniques of working direct with plaster of Paris, how to mix plaster and the about the tools and equipment for direct working
​
Session 3 - Colouring & Finishing. In session three you will complete the direct working before moving on to colouring your sculpture. There'll be a selection of colours and finishes to choose from.
​
Across the three sessions there'll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and presentations about the direct plaster sculpture and other similar processes.
​

WORKSHOPS FOR PRIMARY (KS1 & 2 / P1 to P7)
The sessions are very practical, designed to quip children with a range of skills for making three-dimensional artwork. It’s also fun and great opportunity for staff to learn new skills they can use again year after year.
A full day workshop for up to 30 children (in 2 groups, 15 in the morning & 15 in the afternoon) and including all materials & equipment and teacher notes is £340. All I need is a suitable classroom or similar space and access to a sink.
Choose from:
RELIEF SCULPTURES–This process uses clay and plaster of Paris to make relief plaques. Designs are pressed into clay and then cast in plaster. It’s quick, easy and you’ll be amazed by the results. The process is endlessly variable and easily linked to any topic.
FREE-STANDING SCULPTURES This process uses a variety of easily available materials, together with plaster bandage to create impressive three-dimensional sculpture. In the session children will make an abstract sculpture in the style of Barbara Hepworth, but the process is easily adapted to other styles.
No advance payment, full enhanced DBS and PL insurance certificates.

WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS

Practical workshop, designed to quip staff with a range of skills and resources for delivering the 3D elements of the Art & Design National Curriculum. It’s also great fun.
The session will cover two great processes that are suitable for any group from reception class to adults;

Abstract Sculptures
The skills learnt can be easily adapted to for different classes, year on year.
A two hour workshop, for up to 12 participants, is £360 which includes all materials, equipment, teachers’ notes, suppliers and health & safety information.
All I need is a suitable classroom and some enthusiastic participants. I can fit to your schedule, I’m happy to deliver during the day, after school or evening.
